Real Weddings with David and Jennifer
For our Real Weddings feature, David and Jennifer have been chosen to share the beautiful pictures from their 10 year vow renewal ceremony. I especially love those hanging lanterns! Read on as we see the intimate details that made their celebration unique.
From their photographer, Jason Keefer:
When they got married, David and Jennifer didn’t get a chance to really celebrate because David was immediately deployed to the Gulf.

How cute are those uniforms?
Ten years later, they had an intimate ceremony and reception amongst their children, family and close friends at Jennifer’s parent’s home in Manakin Sabot, VA.
Many of the decorations were handmade or found in craft stores.
I always love the use of mason jars, especially in the summer! See Fabulous Finds: July for more creative uses!
The mix of gingham ribbon and polka-dot pots is so country chic.
Such presence.
Accents of pink bring out the spring-time feel of the outdoor ceremony.
Gerbera daisies stand-out against delicate glass vases, adding to the country spring theme.
Little guys sport their navy gear in support of the groom.
I especially love these hanging lanterns. They add such a romantic element to the reception.
An intimate evening under the trees…
Love in bloom.
Thank you David and Jennifer for sharing your beautiful day and Jason Keefer Photography for the lovely images!
Real Weddings with Larkin and Jason
For our Real Weddings feature, Larkin and Jason have been chosen to share their beautiful spring wedding pictures and the story behind them so we can get a glimpse into their big day. I love the bridal party attire–patterned bridesmaids dresses are all the rage and the groomsmen suits are so hip and retro. Also, don’t forget to check out that gorgeous vintage ring–so unique! I also wore an estate piece for my “something borrowed” so I love that idea, even though for Larkin, it kind of happened on accident! Lovestruck Images (formerly Labor of Love Photography) really captured the fun personalities of this couple, from their cool groomsmen gifts to the whole crowd boogieing to “Sweet Caroline.” Speaking of music, I love their first dance choice to Dave Matthews Band, which should be added to my list for non-traditional music ideas. Another personal touch I loved was how they chose to name their tables, much like I mentioned in my Fabulous Finds for June. And what girl wouldn’t want to end their wedding night with “Time of My Life” from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack! Read on as we hear from the bride herself on the inspiration behind all of these unique and intimate details.
From the bride:
Since the bridesmaids dresses were so colorful we pulled the moss green, gold/yellow, and gray/silver out to be our color scheme.
The church is a historic church in Old Town Alexandria, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and my godmother actually got married there too. The kiss with the prayer book was just for fun!
My dress is Watters Brides, Torrean, and I’m obsessed with it. I didn’t want to ever take it off and it is still hanging in our guest room where I can look at it whenever I want. I still need to get it cleaned and preserved. The saddest part is not being able to wear it again so I’m considering possibly altering and dying it into a formal cocktail dress or something. But for now I can’t bring myself to do anything to it!
The shoes are Paris Hilton and I absolutely love them! My favorite part is the hot pink sole! I’ve actually worn them with another dress to another wedding! All my friends know that I’m obsessed with heels so I had to have something fabulous.
This ring was my great-great-great aunt’s ring, so very vintage. It was given to her by a man as a promise/engagement ring but sadly they never got married; long story. My actual engagement ring was left at the hotel (another long story my brother will never live down) so there aren’t any pictures of it, sadly. But I wore this vintage one on my right hand.
I gave the florist creative freedom, but I’m pretty sure my bouquet was mainly peonies, roses, and maybe some miniature ranunculus.
The bridesmaids dresses are J.Crew. I always knew I wanted a patterned bridesmaids dress and when I saw these I fell in love with them. They are so fun, bright, and more importantly re-wearable!
Both my fiance (now husband) and I knew we didn’t want black tuxes, and when I got the bridesmaids dresses and saw they had gray in them it was perfect for gray tuxes. We also got lucky and found perfect gray suits and black ties for the boys, and so it made sense for Jason to have a black tie and vest, to distinguish him from the groomsmen. There was no way we could have matched any green/yellow with the gray tuxes so we tried to keep it simple.
We had a hard time coming up with bridal party gifts and again, wanted to do something somewhat unique. So, I gave the bridesmaids the gray silk flats that they wore and Jason gave the guys the silver aviators. We loved the idea of wearing the sunglasses in pictures and they added a fun element to everything. In this picture all the girls put on a pair of the guys glasses.
We named every table at the reception after a bar in Blacksburg, Virginia because that is where we met and both went to college (Virginia Tech). Our head table was Hokie House.
We both love unique beer and love trying new micro brews, and we wanted to do something unique for wedding favors. A few years ago we found out about a local brewery, Shenandoah Brewing Company located in Alexandria, that lets you come in and brew your own beer. It’s a really neat process. They keep your beer to ferment and then you go back when it’s ready to bottle and label it. You can create custom labels, too. It was hard keeping it a secret from our family because we needed all the help we could get to bottle and label 9.5 cases!
We brewed a Red Ale, and named it “Gibas I Do Brew.”
Our first dance was to Dave Matthews Band, “You and Me,” however everyone in Jason’s family knows that the most important song of the night is “Sweet Caroline,” which you can see in action. Whenever that song comes on everyone goes crazy and it’s so much fun. It has become a family tradition, choreographed dance and all. We ended the night with one of my absolute favorites from Dirty Dancing, “I’ve Had the Time of My Life.” I grew up watching that movie every day after school with my matron of honor, and it was the perfect ending song to the perfect party where we definitely had the times of our lives!!
Thank you Larkin and Jason and Lovestruck Images (formerly Labor of Love Photography) for sharing these beautiful photos and details with our readers!
Real Weddings with Adrienne and John
For our Real Weddings feature, Adrienne and John have been chosen to share their beautiful spring wedding pictures and the story behind them so we can get a glimpse into their big day. I first wanted to use some of their images for a lime green themed Monday’s Montage, but quickly realized I loved too many details for a small collage! The bright green would be perfect if you’re planning a spring, summer or even fall wedding. Read on as we hear from the bride herself on the inspiration behind their unique and intimate details.
From their photographer, Jodi Miller:
“Their wedding was so elegant and stylish, with so many great DIY details and charm. Adrienne was the epitome of classic hollywood beauty…her hair, dress, and accessories were simply stunning! They had so many great vendors involved in their wedding including: the gorgeous florals, by Artistic Florist; the incredible folk band, Heart Gets Monkey, that provided the reception music; Adrienne’s hair by The Studio; hair accessories + clutches from Etsy; and cake by John’s brother, Brian.”
From the bride:
As far as my ring, it is vintage. The solitaire is my grandmother’s engagement diamond, which she later had reset with the other stones around it. I had a band made in white gold to fit around the ring since it is an unusual shape.
Don’t you love this vintage wedding set?
Beautiful ruffle-trimmed flats.
My bouquet consisted of green cymbidium orchids, ivory hydrangea, miniature calla lilies, assorted pods, hypericum berries and fiddlehead ferns (a surprise from the florist!- I had requested a fiddlehead in the groom’s boutonniere). The pomanders hanging from the chair were made from dried hypericum berries. I purchased the balls of berries already assembled and attached the ivory ribbon myself.
Love the punch of that lime green.
The bridesmaid dresses were by David’s Bridal. I gave them a choice of several knee-length dresses in the olivine color, but they all ended up choosing the same dress! I loved the color because I wanted a shade of green that would complement and enhance the natural surroundings of the Cross Keys Vineyard, where we held the wedding. This green was a kind of earthy tone and it blended perfectly.
Simple bridesmaids dresses complete the classic, timeless theme.
The clutches were from a shop on Etsy called Mollusa. I convoed her and described what I wanted based on photos of her work and within six weeks I had the clutches in hand! They were all black but each had a green fabric flower that was slightly different. I thought this would be a great gift for my bridesmaids that they could use again on special occasions.
Fabulous clutches make a great bridesmaid gift!
We wrote a wine ceremony into the ceremony since it was held at a Vineyard. The minister read a prepared section of The Prophet by Kahlil Gabran and we poured white wine from two carafes into a single carafe, then poured each other a glass from the single carafe. It was our symbolization of unity.
What a unique alternative to the unity candle!
The garden arch in the ceremony belonged to the vineyard. Our florist (The Artistic Florist in Harrisonburg, VA) decorated it with various ivory and green blossoms and greenery and did a fantastic job! We also displayed two flowering dogwood saplings which were at the front, on either side of the arch, which we planted after the wedding.
Serene backdrop and love that adorable patterned flower girl dress.
The ring bearer pillow and flower girl pomander were also made by the florist, out of live flowers (kermit mums). Beautiful!
That ring bearer pillow and flower girl ball of buds is are some of my favorite touches!
The overall theme of the event was Spring and all the symbolism it entails, with new life and blossoming all around. This is why I chose green as the central color and wanted an outdoor ceremony. I thought Spring was a perfectly fitting time to begin a new life together with my husband, and I wanted to convey that through the colors, decorations, and favors.
The moss-covered letters were also ordered from Etsy. These came from Happy Hound’s shop. She also sells a lot of neat stuff for dogs but these were so cool and can be stored for a lifetime because the moss is dried.
Okay, these grassy letter might be my favorite detail!
I had seen placecards displayed on grass mats in a magazine, so I purchased mats from a craft store. I wrote the names on the placecards myself with a green pen.
What a cool idea for the name cards to carry out the grassy theme!
The family tree is also an idea I had from seeing other people using manzanita branches to display things. I originally thought I would put the placecards on the branches with framed family photos underneath but decided that would be too chaotic and that hanging photos from the branches instead made perfect sense, making a “Family Tree”. I obtained wedding photos from relatives, mounted them on cardstock, and hung them with green ribbon.
What an awesome way to display your family tree!
In lieu of favors we donated money to two local animal rescue non-profit groups. We had cards at each table with photos of our cat and dog (both rescued strays) with a caption saying “Thank you” and an explanation of our favors. Our centerpieces were non-floral; living, potted hostas that guests could take home and plant.
Thank you Adrienne and John and Jodi Miller Photography for sharing these beautiful images and details with our readers!
Real Weddings with Jen and Peter
For our Real Weddings feature, Jen and Peter have been chosen to share their beautiful summer wedding pictures and the story behind them so we can get a glimpse into their big day. Read on as Jen shares the inspiration behind their unique details and money saving tips.
Stress Free!
Peter and I got engaged the day after Christmas and didn’t want a long engagement. Collectively, we had been in over a dozen weddings and knew first hand how stressful weddings can be. We vowed to keep our special day about us and the plan was “not to plan.” So we decided to have a very small, intimate ceremony with only our immediate family and best friends. Then at a later date (three months later in October) we would have a reception with all our friends at a vineyard. This way we could relax and enjoy our celebration!
The Location
July 4th seemed an appropriate date for us to get married. Not only because it was on a Saturday, but also because we both love summer, and it is one of our favorite holidays. We chose to get married outside at a close family friend’s house, the Boyles. Peter practically grew up at this house and the Boyle’s were kind enough to let us take over their house for this event. They have a beautiful backyard; a little secret garden in the city. There were approximately 25 guests, including nine nieces and nephews. We tried to keep it a family affair by having Peter’s older brother Bob Jr., marry us and his younger brother Matt play acoustic guitar for the ceremony. He played all our favorite acoustics: Phish, Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, the Beatles. We didn’t send out traditional wedding invitations since we had limited the ceremony to our immediate family & best friends. Instead we chose to send out wedding announcements after we were married that also served as an invitation to our reception at Pollak Vineyard. I used a local designer, 10-1/2 Studios for custom invitations. Owner, Leigh Wilkerson does an amazing job.
The Vision
My vision for the wedding can be described as casual chic, with splashes of pink & green. Because of the nature of our outdoor wedding, I chose an airy, simple, strapless silk dress by BCBG. The shoes were braided gold lame by A. Marinelli. I wanted my bridesmaids to have dresses that could be worn again. I chose a simple strapless embossed cotton sundress (style Lorelei, color tea rose) by J. Crew, completed with coordinating J. Crew flip flops. The groom selected a linen suit from Banana Republic; no tie needed for our affair!
The Flowers and Table Decor
For the bridal bouquets & bouttoneirres, I used mostly gerbera daisies. I decided to go with a local shop called Plantscapes. They were amazing to have worked with me on short notice and I was thrilled with their work and their prices. Another way I kept the cost down was to do the center pieces myself. I bought cut flowers locally and my maid of honor made the floral arrangements for the tables. Other center pieces used were hydrangeas that I potted myself. I painted wooden letter “M’s” in pink & green that were also used. Table clothes were actually cheaper to purchase than to rent. I purchased the green & white table clothes and had cocktail napkins & matches made. All rental tables, chairs, china were done locally from Festive Fare.
The Food
The food was one of our favorite parts! We had it catered by Belmont BBQ & Wayside (Ole Virginia Fried Chicken) for the main dishes. For the cake, we used Chandler’s bakery. Instead of doing a traditional tiered wedding cake, we had them make three standard cakes that were each different flavors. This was another way of cutting cost; most wedding cakes start at a certain price point and go up from there. I took Chandler’s some grosgrain ribbon from Michael’s and fresh cut flowers and they added them to the cake as a topper!
Party Time
For our party in October we used Pollak Vineyard in Charlottesville, VA. They were so easy and laid back.; probably one of the chillest vineyards in the area. They were very affordable and super easy to work with. We used local caterer, Everyday Gourmet. They were also a lot of fun to work with! Entertainment was provided by local musicians (bluegrass players Landon, Andy, & Darrell), and once the party started we had D.J. Cut Master Chop drop some old school tunes. His business card even states “professional party rocker.”
Final Tips
I can’t pick a single element that was my favorite. It was such a special day all around and we were so pleased with how we had planned our wedding. There were no surprise elements or stressful moments and I wouldn’t change a single thing. The one thing that was important was to have it documented by professional. We were absolutely pleased with the Keefer’s photos; I look at them everyday!!!
Honestly we had a hundred people tell us that we did it the right way by having an intimate wedding and a party later. We kept our wedding day about us and that was the most important thing. Any advice I would give is that you will never please everyone whether its family or friends, so don’t do things for other people, do it for you.
Thank you Jen and Peter and Jason Keefer Photography for sharing these beautiful images and details with our readers!
Real Weddings with Krista & Kevin
For our new feature on Real Weddings, Krista and Kevin Jones have been chosen to share their wedding pictures and the story behind them so we can get a glimpse into their big day. Read on as Krista shares the inspiration behind their unique details and money saving tips.
True Love
Kevin and I met at James Madison University in beautiful Harrisonburg, VA. We both love to travel, love the outdoors, and love to find creative, cost-saving ways to do things. We were eager to have a wedding that was different than other weddings we had been to— and do it for under $10,000!I wanted our wedding to have a laid-back, family friendly atmosphere- both kid friendly and fun for our college aged friends and adults.
The Location
We first met and got engaged by a lake under a big willow tree, so for us it was important to have an outdoor wedding. We found Church Point Manor, located along the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach. We loved the huge, old trees and long boardwalk leading to a dock on the river. The price was right and they were open to us providing our own catering. Most venues charge you a cake-cutting fee, make you use their catering, and have many stipulations. The secret to saving money here was finding a place that only charged us a venue use fee.

Real Weddings with Luke and Kelly
For our new feature on Real Weddings, Kelly and Luke Levesque have been chosen to share their wedding pictures and story behind them so we can get a glimpse into their big day. Read on to see their creativity, uniqueness and savings!
The Wedding Ceremony
Our ceremony was very special, creative and sentimental. The church we were married in was my grandfather’s church. My grandpa married my mom and dad on the very same stage that my father married Luke and I. The white tree decoration down the isle and on the stage was all hand-done by Luke and I. We went out in the dead of winter in Ohio and cut and clipped all of the branches for the ceremony.
The Wedding Ceremony Symbolic Painting
During our ceremony, as our “unity” event that symbolizes two becoming one flesh, we performed a live painting event instead. I had the background of the canvas painted beforehand, and we painted during the ceremony the word: “lukelly” on the canvas. The idea developed to artistically unite our two lives together by painting our names joined as one at the wedding
The Wedding Portrait
For my wedding gift to Luke, I decided to paint a life-size wedding portrait to surprise him with on the day of our wedding. It was a total surprise, and when the piece was revealed at our reception, Luke was speechless and a soft gasp spread over our guests at the tables. It was an amazing gift to be able to create for my new husband!
The Veil
I had this perfect idea of what I wanted my veil to look like, and just could not find one anywhere that fit my idea nor the materials. The store I got my wedding gown from was trying to sell a puny fishnet veil for over $100 and I was not about to pay that much for it when I knew the materials only cost somewhere around $15-$20. I found a lady on Etsy.com who made pin-up hats with fishnet material. We talked back and forth online over months about what I was looking for. It was definitely a collaborative project and she only charged me $30 for my custom-made veil! It was perfect.
The Flowers
My bridesmaids and I constructed all the flowers in the wedding. I made my bouquet, each one of them made their own bouquets and we all helped with the boutonnières. It was actually a lot of fun and none of us were stressed. I used mostly white ranunculus in their bouquets with a couple roses and sprouts of baby’s breath, surrounded by aspidistra leaves folded in half. My bouquet primarily consisted of roses with white stock and feathers sprouting about. I purchased the ranunculus flowers from the website: “fiftyflowers.com” and the rest all came from KROGER! We saved TONS of money in this area.
The Wedding Dress
My dress was one of a kind made by a French designer. I found it at a shop in Columbus, OH called “Elegant Bride.” There is not one duplicate dress in the store! My dress cost somewhere around $2500, which was one of the most expensive purchases for the entire wedding. It was a lot, but it was THE dress and I couldn’t mind the price!
Other Wedding Details From The Bride
After we were married, we drove away in a 1940s Ford convertible. It was a lot of fun having all the cars honk at us as we drove by.
I designed and printed all of the “save the dates,” invitations and programs for the wedding. The programs, envelopes and invitations were printed on an organic, seeded, plantable paper that I ordered wholesale from a company online called, “Of the Earth.” So I saved a LOT of money on invitations by making them myself.
Our cake was exceptional, made from a little Amish lady in Ohio, which also was a money-saver, considering she was not a big-name cake decorator. Sometimes choosing the small-name businesses can save a lot of money while still giving great products!
